Boomkat Product Review:
Siskiyou is a project with roots in the Great Lake Swimmers. The group leader, Colin Huebert is a former member of GLS, while his collaborator, Erik Arnesen is still a member. Apparently, Huebert left Great Lake Swimmers only to work on an organic farm before eventually settling in Vancouver, Canada. These songs came about from impromptu recordings made at Huebert's new home, setting down new songs in a sketchbook-like fashion, with only rough-cut acoustic guitar and vocals forming the initial fabric of the production before a series of overdubs expanded the pieces into a more fully-fledged format. There remains a very homely and rustic quality to this music however, with each song committed to record with a feel that's both spontaneous yet rings with a sense of definitive finality - it's hard to imagine the lo-fi, brass-laden arrangement of 'Everything I Have' sounding improved upon had it been recorded in a proper studio. The song's rickety, slightly malformed drums and off-the-cuff, croaky vocals project their own sense of humble, domesticated magic that's very much in line with the emotional core of the song.
