Boomkat Product Review:
"Optikatechniqua was born and raised in Barbados, before relocating in his teens to Bristol. He's been immersed in sub-bass since the mid 90s, partying in many a field to jungle since back when the Amen break was king. After several years promoting mashup electronica nights and honing his sound via a number of well received releases under different names, he's now a professional mastering engineer and general sub-bass killer. 'Sinister Dub' is an infectious and maniacal blend of dubstep, ragga-jungle and dark electronic soundscapes, using tones created from animal growls, recordings of "intimate" moments with his girlfriend, various objects being beaten with a bat, his own self-built synth comprising a tone generator wired into an amp with distortion (played by short circuiting it with a knife), and some psychedelic casualty vocal cuts liberally applied. Made to kick up the dust at the edges of the dancefloor, and with a squelching low-end undertow that'll threaten any bassbin, Optikatechniqua's addictive electro-hybrid music is as strange and tender as it is heavy and challenging, as smoothly organic as it is robotically buzzing, as cleverly forward looking as it is nonsensically nostalgic. His loose and untethered production style thrives on a unique kind of expert primitivism, and 'Sinister Dub' is the paradoxically potent end product of a carefully uncontrolled audio experiment. Mary Anne Hobbs has proved to be an enthusiastic early champion, with several tracks played in recent weeks, and positive DJ feedback is emerging from a diverse range of selectors, including Plump DJs, Coldcut, Floating Points, Melissa Bradshaw, Domu, James Mountain, and plenty more."
