Straight out of Dar-Es-Salaam, Tanzania at 300BPM, NTS unleash a thrilling 4-track soundclash between two titans of the wildest new dance music innovation of recent times.
’Singeli Sound’ is for the dancers. Literally named for the frenzied style of movement by youth from the ends in Dar-Es-Salaam, Singeli has gained traction with a worldwide underground thanks to the Nyege Nyege Tapes label, who have platformed the sound via cult compilations and solo albums, and their legendary festival in Uganda.
In 2021 NTS joined the party with a 5 minute mini-documentary ‘Singeli Sound’ featuring the four tracks here on its soundtrack, highlighting the key studio powerhouses of Pamoja and Sisso through interviews with pioneering producers such as Bamba Pana and Makaveli, set to footage of dancers brukking out. Wherever you are, the tracks are now available for practice in your dance studio/living room/club, and we take no responsibility for mashed up bones and limbs.
Lighting it off with the breathlessly sped-up trap and dancehall tropes of ‘Ninaasila’, the sound toggles the metrics between double and half-time, gelled with vocals, with particularly incendiary example on ‘Amka’, while ‘Vumbi la mguu’ tilts it well over the speed limit like double-time makina with its pitched-up vox and lightspeed bass pelt, beside the slightly more reserved ‘Naikoki’ with its autotuned licks and quicktrot pressure.
