Boomkat Product Review:
German artist Karo makes a strong impression with this new long-player based on a minimal guitar style and a memorable set of vocal performances. At its best, Sing Out, Heart! pairs Karo's very pure, unaffected singing style with only the sparsest of electric guitar accompaniment, as heard on opener 'You Don't Know' or 'The Sailor', on which Karo sounds like a European answer to Feist or Chan Marshall. The rockier moments aren't quite so effective, although on 'The Hunger' the guitars writher around in a Sonic Youth inspired fashion, albeit with far more polish and self-restraint than Thurston and co. could possibly endorse. However, on the drum machine-backed 'Gold Star' a fine balance is established, preserving the steely melancholy of the finer tracks but breaking out of the lumbering minimal stylings of elsewhere. A little inconsistent but still well worth checking out.
