Sonic Youth’s 2010 swan song, the soundtrack to a thriller-drama feature by French director Fabrice Gobert, resurfaces on a 10th anniversary pressing.
Depicting Kim Gordon (guitar), Thurston Moore (guitar, piano), Lee Ranaldo (guitar, piano), and drummer Steve Shelley (joined by Jim O’Rourke on bass for one song) as a band for the final time, the entirely instrumental soundtrack for ‘Simon Werner A Disparu’ is, as Ranaldo puts it, “a wonderful group of tracks to go out on….”.
Sadly SY disbanded in the following year, after the separation and subsequent divorce of Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore, and as such it’s possible to read a sense of internal friction lurking in the recordings for ‘Simon Werner A Disparu’, a lokey, brittly discordant tension and frayed nerves that emerge thru its wickedly off key melodies and slunky shape, that coincidentally matched the film’s mood.
