Boomkat Product Review:
Sufjan Stevens gets back to what he does best here with a second collection of Christmas songs, and what a pack of tracks this is. Billed as five EPs, it clocks in at almost three hours long, and over that time explores each different musical interest Stevens has, from obscure electronica to pallid reworks of Sacred Harp classics. Starting traditionally, Stevens pulls us into his log cabin with epically orchestrated versions of ‘Silent Night’, ‘Jingle Bells’ and ‘Auld Lang Syne’ among new compositions, peppering these large numbers with simple, piano led beauties like ‘Christ the Lord is Born’. Mid way through things take a turn for the electronic though, as Stevens offers up a deliriously bonkers glitched-out version of ‘Good King Wenceslas’ and a funky rework of ‘Alphabet St.’. Seriously, it’s all here – what are you waiting for? Christmas?
