Boomkat Product Review:
Here's another Lyrichord release looking to offer you an overview of a strain of music indigenous to a particular region, and this time it's Northern Thailand, which apparently is renowned for the dichotomy between its serenity and the commanding presence of drum ensembles. This collection comes with an authenticated pedigree thanks to the curatorial hand of ethnomusicologist Dr Andrew Shahriari, who accumulated an extensive catalogue of field recording over a two-year period. The album depicts the sounds of various settings, including a festival at a Buddhist temple and an animistic spirit-possession dance. Taking a different approach some of the tracks present specific instrumental studies, introducing the listener to a particular instrument or playing style as on 'Pi Saw: Solo Demonstration', which is delivered more as a reference tool than an actual musical performance.
