Boomkat Product Review:
Notable by their absence, Emptyset return from the ether frontier with their first release since 2013.
Developed through a commission with Deutschland Radio, "'Signal' is a performance project exploring sound and composition through ionospheric propagation and the atmospheric modulation of radio waves, integrating aspects of atmospheric noise and space weather within a real-time transmitted performance."
The two pieces take form as billowing washes of static interference perfused with keening melodic silhouettes hovering on the cusp of composed arrangement and phenomenological occurrence. They're of particular interest to these ears after recently checking the 'Empire of Noise' documentary about radio jamming with original samples - as the Russians did to the Germans in the cold war, and North Korea currently do to everything coming their way.
Aesthetcially there are striking similarities; melodies struggle thru static thickets, attempting to convey scrambled information. In their atmospheric extractions, we guess Emptyset are flipping that on its head, attempting to deconstruct, decipher that ether noise into fine-toothed compositions swarming from atonality to empty lacunæ via spectral convolution.
