Alex Menzies marks up a 3rd LP of electronic experiments for Kathexis, his 2nd for them in 2016, following the deviant works of his Love Over Will LP.
SIBILO was written to commission from Scottish Ballet to accompany a new 30 minute dance piece choreographed by Sophie Laplane, who has previously paired her work with music by John Xela.
All four tracks strike a balance between glancing, fractious percussion and stately chamber instrumentation, with the nimble quickstep and sorrowful strings of Prologue recalling elements of Ostgut Ton’s Shut Up And Dance! collection, whereas Duet sashays off into more spacious, ethereal zones, and the baroque Interlude gives way to the flamenco-inflected acoustic guitar tone and Arca-esque keys of Quartet, one of the EP’s and Alex’s most refined, accomplished pieces to date.
