Boomkat Product Review:
And the award for the best name of the year goes to…. Well, okay it might be a bit late for that – but props to Daniel Padden anyway. You really have to know the context of the record to get exactly WHY the name is great, and this is Padden’s ‘mash up’ record, full to the brim with samples and edits. Not just any samples though, these come from the furthest reaches of the world, and pretty much anything is up for the chop. It’s hard to hear exactly what Padden’s done at times – occasionally it’s just a looped segment of some ethereal Middle Eastern devotional song, and sometimes the sampling gets more detailed and obvious. In the end this feels like a really smart mixtape made by a producer with a keen ear and a better record collection than most of us. You’ll hear things you didn’t expect to hear, and hear them reframed in ways you’d never expect to have heard – and that’s a very good thing indeed.
