Boomkat Product Review:
More spiritual, dusty deep house magick from Motherbeat matriarch Octo Octa.
2019's "Resonant Body" was a joy: a spare, impeccably-produced retro house delight that built on our shared dance nostalgia rather than languishing in it. On "She's Calling", Maya Bouldry-Morrison returns with more gasoline for crate diggers, three tracks that circle around the deep house canon without recycling dead-on-arrival tricks (ahem Bicep) or trying to recapture long-lost moments. Rather, these winding rhythmic burners remind how unashamedly fun deep house can be without losing its inherent scent of soulful melancholy. 'Find Your Way Home' is a sad girl's anthem with wounded synth loops and heartstring-tugging bass womps, while chunky breaks, spidery acid lines and spinbacks keep it firmly in the transcendent mode. The fact that it was written at the end of an aborted 2020 tour as Bouldry-Morrison was attempting to make it back home to the USA just offers extra emotional weight.
For anyone craving heavier material, opener 'Goddess Calling' harks back to Orbital's early '90s winners with clattering 12-bit sampler-on-the-fritz breaks and angelic pads. Now all we need is a forest at moonlight, a pocket full of mushrooms and a working vaccine. Ahhhhh.
