Boomkat Product Review:
Toronto MC, DJ and producer myst milano. shocks and awes with their purple-hued debut, folding wide-eyed personality into minimal and experimental club trap hybrids that sound half Awful Records and half MoMA Ready.
A regular fixture on Toronto's diverse nightlife circuit, milano channels their restless, genre-straddling energy into "Shapeshyfter". A punk drummer in a previous life, milano used their pandemic lockdown time to get better acquainted with Ableton, finding a way to meet their brightly colored socially-charged rhymes with similarly vivid and multi-layered productions. Their musical interests are lobbed into a blender on "Shapeshyfter", with the vague template of cloud rap contorted to absorb sleazy house throbs ('No Shade'), 4AM jungle ('Wax Poetic') and even anxious Radiophonic bleeps ('Sewn Up').
It's milano's vocals that seal the deal though; their confidence and personality as an MC guides the album, and whether they're boasting of sexual triumphs or contemplating police violence, there's a sense they're in complete control.
