Boomkat Product Review:
I'm not entirely sure what it is about Canada that gives them such a command over the indie scene, but they're at it again here. Young Galaxy are on their sophomore album now, and 'Shapeshifter' is produced by hip thang Dan Lissvik of Studio, so will probably sell a bazillion copies and win a Grammy. Okay, so I'm bitter - I wanted Bieber to win that one, and to be honest Young Galaxy don't sound anything like the Arcade Fire. They've got far more in common with electro-pop types Cut Copy or even M83. The shadow of the 80s is present throughout, but with Lissvik at the mixing desk it feels like there is always an air of quality stopping the songs from becoming pastiche. The synth pads and tones might occasionally bring you into the Vangelis universe, but it is handled with credibility and ends up adding an endearing sheen to Young Galaxy's songs. 'Shapeshifter' ends up an oddity, a rare barely classifiable slice of unusual electronic pop music that is far subtler than it might let on. Check it!
