Mexico’s electronic pioneer Fax gives your skull an acidic shoegaze swill with a brilliant 2nd drop on Superpang
Since the turn of the century Ruben Tamayo aka Fax has been a key figure in Central American electronic music via his solo productions and collaborations, and programming of the Static Discos label. More recently found working with zaikai and Braulio Lam for the likes of Miami’s Schematic, he now follows 2021’s ‘Quicksand’ with a 2nd, contrasting session for Italy’s Superpang.
’Shapes’ sees him tessellate abstract shapes in space with the plonging acid ambient jazz functions of ‘Shape A’, convecting the juiciest 303-like tones in fathomless dimensions, spritzed with bursts of hi-hats and flyaway riffs that really lure into its surreal matrix. The shapes continues to shift with the desert rock shoegaze and cactus prickle of ’Shape B’, precipitating a piece of slow, curdled acid electronica in ’Shape C’ that neatly characterises his range.
