Boomkat Product Review:
Richmond's DJ Harrison remembers his faves on 'Shades of Yesterday', covering classic cuts from Steely Dan's Donald Fagen, The Beatles and Stevie Wonder.
Cover records are always tricky, but you can tell that Devonne Harris, aka DJ Harrison is passionate about this set of songs. There's nothing particularly off the wall, but Harris tracks through an interconnected suite of funk-fuelled hits, from Vince Guaraldi's 'Little Birdie' and Ohio Players' 'Sweet Sticky Thing' to The Beatles' 'Revolver' highlight 'Tomorrow Never Knows', that was famously sampled by the Chemical Brothers. Harrison spreads all his arrangements with the dust and cosmic funk energy we last heard on 2022's 'Tales From The Old Dominion', so if you fancy hearing some familiar themes given the Stones Throw treatment, this'll do it.
