Boomkat Product Review:
Natasha Khan (Bat For Lashes) flips preconceptions with the worldly, psychedelic vision of her Sexwitch debut.
Alongside in-demand psych unit Toy and producer Dan Carey she covers six psych and folk songs from Morocco, Thailand, Iran and the USA with the sort of authenticity and feel that you might not expect from a major label-signed pop artist.
Each original song was selected for its rhythmic power and allure, rather than cultural provenance, and was recorded live in order to retain their natural groove and composure.
They veer from modern updates, as with the swirling electronics applied in opener, 'Ha Howa Ha Howa', thru subtle augmentations such as the intimate version of Iranian standard 'Helelyos', to the dreamlike transportation of rural Thai folk in 'Lam Plearn Kiew Bao'.
