Boomkat Product Review:
This debut by NYC trio Alger Hiss came in Ba Da Bing's nascent years (1995 to be precise), showcasing the band's idiosyncratic fusion of musical genres as seemingly incompatible as no wave and math rock bordering on fully fledged prog. While the band's instrumental passages tend to be coloured by noisy technicolour clamour, there's a flamboyance to the musicianship on these recordings which exceeds any notion that this is just another jammed out din. The comparisons to early Sonic Youth, or even Swans, are very much apparent, with the production tapping into a sound that might be ten years older than it actually is. In any case, Alger Hiss are a band worth investigating if you missed their output first time round.
