Dream-woven sorcery by french composer Aude Van Wyller aka Oï Les Ox, poetically operating in and around fissures of pop music and found sounds on a hypnagogic tip somewhere between Voice Actor, Chris Marker, Dennis Tyfus and Mica Levi’s loose af CDJ mixes.
’Serrure Relax’ is a spellbinding hybrid mix commissioned by Arif Kornweitz for Jajaja NeeNeeNee radio, an arts based station broadcasting from Amsterdam. Oï Les Ox’s first release since her startlingly inventive debut ‘Crooner Qui Coule Sous Les Clous’ in 2020 for Primordial Void and later The Death of Rave, it feels like a looser echo of that album’s precedents, unravelling with a florid tapestry of vintage drum machines, fragments of unknown film scores and snatched voice memos.
The nearly hour-long work stages an oneiric arcade of voices and lyrics, sung by Aude, spliced with covers of songs by Sonic Youth, Fleetwood Mac, Blondie, Miles Davis, Earth, Wind & Fire and Ruth liberally sifted from YouTube “shred” videos, where users interpolate the sounds of music videos. Equally absurd and ingenious, the results lure you into a singular reading of the contemporary world, a place sensuously riddled with fake non-places and, in her own words, “clumsy mimesis” that come to inform the underlying sense that we’re all living in a simulation.
A big attraction of Oï Les Ox’s music is an ability to subliminally transition between fleeting sensations of the sublime, as Aude weaves a glittering thread of logic thru juxtapositions of aleatoric ambiences, glimmers of warped folk and chamber music and shards of ecstatic electronics that will lead attentive listeners and adventurers into her bizarre, beautiful hall of mirrors.
