Semi-concrète Surrogation
Veteran Belgian sound artist Yves De Mey returns to Superpang with a long-form meditation made from slow piano tones and hypnotic synth drones.
'Semi-concrète Surrogation' is an unexpected deviation from De Mey. Even his last Line full-length, 2019's 'Sueda', had an identifiable rhythmic component, and his last run of EPs happily showed off his gristly sound design and twitchy beats. This one's comparatively barren, a slow, solemn exercise that's anchored around low-register piano notes that hover around dazed, indistinct analogue gurgles. As the piece progresses, the drones begin to take pride of place; feedback erupts into resonant whines and by the end of the 40-minute piece, the track has transformed into a wailing symphony. It's a terrifying listen, but a good one.
