Boomkat Product Review:
Some seriously trad country rock stylings from this Brooklyn sextet. Led by former Oneida guitarist, Pat Sullivan, Oakley Hall specialise in lengthy '70s-style electrified country jams laced with male-female harmonies, sparkling lapsteel and languid fiddle playing. From the get-go you know what Second Guessing is all about: 'Hiway' is an extended mid-tempo stomp that goes on for about four minutes longer than it needs to (and therefore exactly the right length of time fans of good-time '70s Southern-style Americana would expect it to). Similarly, you get the feeling that the band are entirely conscious - and entirely comfortable, for that matter - with the fact that the eight and a half minute noodlefest, 'Volume Rambler' is going nowhere in a hurry. It is afterall, all part of the tradition they're aligning themselves with. If you've got a problem with a bunch of NYC hipsters doing a creditable approximation of the Allman Brothers or Lynyrd Skynyrd, then you might want to avoid this. Otherwise, it's a blast.
