Boomkat Product Review:
Japan’s T5UMUT5UMU exerts tensile, hi-NRG spins on Kongo tekno, halftime D&B, and gqom ballistics for Uganda’s indomitable Hakuna Kulala
A regular player at Tokyo’s Discipline party, and with a haul of solo drops and for likes of Natural Sciences and DJ Losers Magdalena’s Apathy to his name, T5UMUT5UMU pays up on his reputation for hybrid club productions with four body-rattling cuts in ‘Sea of Trees’.
Whipping up a frenzy of ricocheting percussion and robo-dancehall bass in ‘Fireball’, he runs the voodoo down like 33EMYBW-esque insectoid percussion clashing Menzi’s gqom mutations in ‘Desert’, and comes off like a more humid echo of Torn’s hard Russian D&B on the dramatic swerve of the EP’s title tune, before registering its most reserved, but strongest, moment in the Zulu-skooled gqom stepper ‘Bottomless Valley’.
