Cache Cache / Finders Keepers commission Felix Kubin to trawl through his collection of German Home Recording Tape Music Of The 1980s to put together this killer comp - one of the label's very best. Running to 25 obscure one-hit wonders and hardly-known tracks - CHBB's 'Ima Iki Mashoo' is probably the best known to us, at least, which says a lot! - it's a rippin' trip around the tight knit but diffuse tape networks that Kubin was inspired by and tied to from an early age after witnessing a TV show starring performances by Palais Schaumberg, Der Plan, DAF and Der Körper und die Seele. In other words, it's Germany's post-punk music; a hormonal, cerebral innovation mixing danceable rhythms and wayward electronics with a pure, youthful vigor that wanted to do away with or take the piss out of the music that their parents listened to, whilst also reflecting the increasingly industrialised world around them. We'd also daresay there's a dash of the Hamburg sense of humour to his selections, drawing for those bonkers, funked-up numbers such as Pyrolator's 'Vati Es Brennt' beside the louche oddness of the Die Dominas-esque 'Except Me And My Monkey' by Quick Culture's Tom Dokoupil, or the scrambled transmission of Co-Mix's 'Revol Rules OK' alongside dreamy, moody pieces like Frank Schröder's floating 'Ohne Titel (1983-18)'. Together they frame naif but knowing sound, and equally a rare portal to the roots of a sound whose influence can still be felt today. Quite honestly, accounting for the love, effort and knowledge it gives up, this compilation is worth the entry twice over. Massive recommendation.
