Boomkat Product Review:
This is an incredibly good album - focusing on the multi-talented work of Markus Acher (Tied and Tickled Trio, Notwist), Keyboardist Florian Zimmer, Drummer Christoph Brandner (Tied and Tickled Trio) and the strangely unique voice of Valeire Trebelijahr. Lali Puna is a pop group par excellence. The context here is theoretically light : synth-pop with an acoustic underlay - but what astounds here is the timeless and uniquely addictive quality of the songs. The track titles alone are a worthy cause for celebration, opening with the addictive Nin-com-pop. Middle-Curse opens up with a dusty, crackling modulated harp and a deep bassline that hovers over Valerie's spoken vocal like a portable sun. Contratempo sounds like the bastard son of New Order, Stereolab and Isan merged to perfection. Those of you familiar with the Tied and Tickled Trio will be well aware of just how accomplished this lot are as musicians - and in this more controlled and structured environment the perfectly honed scale of their songwriting abilities comes to the fore. Pop music is rarely as engaging, uplifting or as deeply moving as this.
