Boomkat Product Review:
Bass-Pop pinup Fantastic Mr. Fox re-enters the fray with a highly anticipated new doublepack, presenting his first new material in over 18 months. In contrast to the 2-step memes assimilated on his scene-defining 'Evelyn' and 'Sketches' EPs, he's incorporated heavier traces of House and R&B on the 'San'en' EP, and successfully so, thanks to the effete vocals of label mate Alby Daniels and a strong song-writing partnership with Mihret Yohannes. From the swaggered House bounce of 'Pascal's Chorus' to the infectious bass chord hook of 'San'en' thru Timba-like slow jam 'Yesterday's Fall', there's a concise, adroit compositional skill at play which measures up closely to his peer Jamie xx, or kindred spirit James Blake. But it's that queered, quavering melodic accent which sets his new material apart from simple stylistic deference, and should equally appeal to festival crowds and sweaty basement throngs alike. A fine model for the UK Bass/Pop nexus, probably one of its strongest this year.
