Boomkat Product Review:
On his third album Andreas Soderstrom, known more concisely as Ass, provides seven wonderfully crafted instrumental folk songs. While its starker predecessor 'My Get Up And Go Just Got Up And Went' set a more sombre style of playing, 'Salt Marsh' builds an eerily lush sound, taking influence from the jazz into folk findings of Pentangle and traces of Six Organs of Admittance's psyched strums. This is probably due to the expanded lineup now including harmonium, marimba, Fender Rhodes, hurdy gurdy, bowed cymbals and string machine to flesh out his lonesome guitar, coupled with an exceptional production job from Johan Berthling of Tape and the Hapna label. It's perhaps this final factor that manages to make the whole thing coherant, giving an expert sense of space to the often dense layers of interwoven melody, making each instrument intoxicate the senses with its own refined awareness and placement in this complex tapestry.
