Boomkat Product Review:
Conceptual artist Ben Kelly, aka Aboutface, describes himself as an ecomusicologist and "°s" is his reaction to the psychological effects of the pandemic.
In the past, Kelly has traveled to Peru and worked with the indigenous Wampís community, and assembled A/V performances inspired by his dream journals using sounds from a Polar expedition. Comparatively, "°s" is more homespun, a collage of poetry, environmental recordings, synths, flute and guitar. The album is split into four pieces that run through Kelly's concept, where his improvisations are informed by the fibonacci sequence to mimic nature's fractal patterns.
So far so hippy, so where does it actually leave us musically? It actually drops us down somewhere between early Emeralds, vintage Biosphere and Woob. There's a rigorous devotion to the concept that's admirable, but the end result is well-trodden in the ambient realm.
