Boomkat Product Review:
It was bound to cause controversy, Why?; a member of erstwhile madcore hiphoppers Clouddead does an indie album. Because 'Elephant Eyelash' was exactly that, devoid of his previous hiphoppish flow, Why? was singing, he had guitars, he had drums, he had real songs! An album which sounded much like Sebadoh or Pavement B-Sides run through a broken sampler and then injected with some tearful Oakland soul. People got mad, Anticon was losing it's hiphop cred rapidly, and thank goodness; a label taking a risk. The lead track on this small EP is culled from said album and was easily one of the tightest tracks, featuring a chorus that is destined to haunt all your trips to the toilet for the next lifetime (trust me... it's infectious). We are treated to a video which sets 'Rubber Traits' to pictures in rather a B3ta fashion; singing dogs, literal representation of the lyrics and the words popping up on the screen karaoke style. As horrible as that might sound, it works pretty well and is a refreshing change from your usual 'video-camera-out-of-the-car-window' lo-fi video. The remaining exclusive tracks retain the high pedigree, including a final track which brilliantly looks back to that hip hop sound of old, why styles.
