Boomkat Product Review:
Romance Is Boring is the third album from cult indie rockers Los Campesinos!, and it is by some measure their most convincing show of material to date. There's undoubtedly been a growth spurt in creative terms since last they checked in with us, on 2008's We're Beautiful, We're Doomed, and both as songwriters and an instrumental presence the group have developed some serious muscles. The already fulsome sound palette seems to have expanded and grown more confrontational over the past couple of years, and perhaps their best asset - the band's handle on wit - proves more astute than ever. Lead vocalist and lyricist Gareth is on unflinchingly sharp form (apart from when on the title track he pronounces "Bernard" in the American way, which is a bit irritating and surely a faux-pas for such a British sounding band), sounding both disarmingly direct and chuckle-inducingly incisive on "Straight In At 101', which opens with the gambit: "I think we need more post-coital and less post-rock/Feels like the build-up takes forever, but you never get me off". Splendid.
