Boomkat Product Review:
The former singer, songwriter and guitarist for Sheffield quintet Monkey Swallows The Universe, Nat Johnson now launches her debut full-length, following up on the well-received single, 'Dirty Rotten Soul', which scored a single-of-the-week accolade from Steve Lamacq. Now with backing band The Figureheads, Johnson rejoins with Kevin Gori (a fellow founder of Monkey Swallows The Universe) and has emerged with an album of understated and affable indie-pop. Early entries 'Agnes' and 'Wonderful Emergency' go down a treat - hardly breaking new ground, but proving to be worthy exercises however generic they might seem in the cold light of day. When Johnson reverts to more folksy terrain, as on 'Envy', the outcome seems a little more unusual and the uncluttered, brass-augmented arrangement works nicely. Of the selection you still might be inclined to suggest that 'Dirty Rotten Soul' remains the standout moment, shuffling along with a playful country feel that suits Johnson well.
