Boomkat Product Review:
Now it’s not often that I recommend something based on the strength of a video, and it’s only very rarely when a pop video is actually watchable from beginning to end without nodding off, let alone paying for, but this is something quite special. Featuring the very lovely Chloe Sevigny in the lead role and Smog’s very own Bill Callahan supporting, the video for ‘I Feel Like the Mother of the World’ is an absolute triumph, not only does the visual style meld perfectly with Callahan’s unique sense of humour and songwriting, but it flows like a movie – I was glued to the screen as it played through. Bill Callahan’s turn as a newsreader predicting the end of the world is inspired, and Sevigny’s world-weary mother sees her in ever-watchable fine form. Not only do we have this though, there’s another video for the lead track on the EP ‘Rock Bottom River’ (again taken from ‘A River Ain’t too Much to Love’) and then two quite beautiful brand new and exclusive tracks. The extra tracks were recorded a few months after the album, and one features the folk-pixie Joanna Newsom, showing that the Drag City family is like a big love-in. It’s no secret that we have quite a thing for Mr Callahan here, but take it from us – this EP is a real gem.
