Boomkat Product Review:
Simon Scott's Kesh Recordings presents a new album from French artist Monolyth & Cobalt, aka Mathias Van Eecloo. Previously, the musician, photographer and plastic artist has self-released a pair of albums in highly limited quantities, but with Rives he's set to command a wider audience with his strange, lo-fi soundscapes, collaged electronics and eroded drones. The tone of the record situates itself somewhere between scratchy analogue fidelities and abstract, digital processing, with the likes of 'Road (movie)' combining the two extremes to strange, ruptured effect. There are plenty of strong, if slightly surreal moments here, the most unusual of all being the woozy, intoxicating trip-hop of 'Whatever You Think You WIll Die', complete with uneasy beats and off-kilter pipe melodies.
