Boomkat Product Review:
‘Rising Stars’ is the latest in a long line of quality albums Trunk have been peddling for the last few years. You might have come across British jazz legend Michael Garrick before thanks to his seminal album ‘Moonscape’ (still one of the rarest and most sought after UK jazz LP's), and just after this release Garrick teamed up with fugelhorn player Shake Keane and recorded a super limited EP called ‘A Case of Jazz’. Keane at this time was fascinated with choirs, and the opening tracks on ‘Rising Stars’ are a testament to this, with the Hastings Girls Choir providing the backdrop to Keane and Garrick’s patented exotic jazz flavours. It shouldn’t work I know, but there’s something magical about Garrick’s music, something deeply enjoyable about the way he handles the genre that keeps me going back time and time again. Crate diggers will already be excited about this one, but trust me it’s more than just breaks and samples – there’s a lot to be excavated on ‘Rising Stars’.
