Ringer seems to draw its primary influences from krautrock and early synthesizer music rather than the more explicitly beat-driven, hip hop and jazz-informed sounds of previous Four Tet albums. 'Ringer' details arpeggiating synths all underscored by simple 4/4 kicks and soft, hissing cymbals. It sure is a far cry from the noisy freeform improvisations of Hebden's collaborations with Steve Reid. Next up, 'Ribbons' features some delightful, vintage-sounding electronic treatments, taking a good 90 seconds or so of meandering tones before a technoid drum pattern kicks in, eventually giving rise to yet more arp action. After 'Swimmer's droning organs and spacey phased percussion, the drums make a full, caterwauling return on 'Wing Body Wing', but even here there's a lack of clutter - and a wonderful motorik calm thanks to some great, understated synth patterns.
