Swedish prog-electronic-folk trio Tape recorded their ace third album 'Rideau' with Marcus Schmickler. Originally released way back in 2005, now it's back and on vinyl for the first time, with a remix from Japanese outfit Minamo.
These days Johan Berthling is maybe better known for his work in Ghosted with Oren Ambarchi, but a couple of decades ago he was recording with Tomas Hallonsten and his brother Andreas as Tape, making music that straddled prog rock, folk, and experimental electronics. "Rideau" was the band's finest moment, released on Berthling's own Häpna imprint and solidifying their sound, with help from Pluramon mastermind Marcus Schmickler, who added his distinct production touches. “Marcus really shaped the music, working architecturally to build the form of the pieces,” Berthling says now.
The whole album is worth investigating if you've never come across it before, but quiet epic 'A Spire' is a clear stand-out. Growing slowly from banjo plucks and simplistic glockenspiel chimes, it sounds like Steve Reich's "Music For 18 Musicians" rendered in a Scandinavian barn. The hybrid folk-prog-electronic thing didn't last very long, but it's good to hear this one's aged like a French wine.
