Boomkat Product Review:
This 1993 release from Lyrichord reveals the talents of mbira maestro Ephat Mujuru, a member of the Shona community of Zimbabwe. In his early career Mujuru was an activist for Zimbabwean independence, making him one of the very few artists who could legitimately be said to have politicised percussion-based music. Not long after his homeland gained its independence, Mujuru became the first African to teach at the Zimbabwe College Of Music, a position which eventually led him to travel and take up a position as a lecturer at the University Of Washington in Seattle. This was all during the early eighties, and between this period and his untimely death in 2001, Mujuru demonstrated a mastery of traditional pieces as well as his own compositions, and this excellent release from Lyrichord presents the musician in the full broadness of his talents.
