Retrospective 2012-2022
Berlin’s arch techno goth, Kareem charts 10 years of deep field manoeuvres thru a mix of previously unreleased, remixed and harder-to-find compilation cuts that prove his mettle for unyielding dark traction.
‘Retrospective 2012-2022’ scans Kareem’s work during a subtly altered new phase of his work, starting around the time of his dark ambient album ‘Porto Ronco’ for The Death of Rave and a decided turn toward slower techno, when compared with the steaming industrial piledrivers that came before them on his Zhark Recordings. The set stands as a very handy catch-up primer for those whose attentions have been elsewhere, clocking up 11 staunch examples of his newfound, slower groove and concentrated atmospheric content which have largely run counter to trends for faster, harder, “better” over the time covered.
In chronological order it picks up momentum from 2012’s compilation rarity ’Succumb to the Pressure’ thru the relatively more brisk, unreleased industrial stepper ‘Zeitgeist’ of 2022. In the thick of it, harder-to-please techno stompers will get their RDA of stomp with the clanking force of ‘Procession of the Possessed’ (2013), lunk-headed tribal badness in ‘A Night to Remember (2014), plus spirit-grinding acid on ‘Ballparadox’ (2015), and notable doses of reverberating metallic drone in ‘Soaked’ (2016), a signature warehouse spanker in ‘Fmwahn!’ (2017), and the grotty trudge of ‘Rose II’ (2020) and ‘Dawn’ (2021) to bing everyone in line with his uncompromising vision.
