Boomkat Product Review:
A collaborative black metal soundscape from French doom act The Austrasian Goat and Swedish dark ambient maven Ondo, Yrsel combines the best of the two artists' respective genres into a deep and immersive collection of harrowing, drone-embracing atmospheres. Requiem For The Three Kharites takes its concept from the Three Graces of Greek mythology, and the album purports to be "A requiem for the loss of culture in an ever spiralling material world" and furthermore: "a twilight ode to the mythic manifestation of our higher facilities". Resonating with this notion of decay and all things entropic, the album seems to steadily dissolve away and regress after its bludgeoning opener, 'The Last Visions Of Aglaea' which announces itself with laser-beam analogue electronics, tons of low-end feedback and a demonic, sneering vocal. From here onwards, dark and doomy apocalyptic tones seem to emanate ruthlessly from the mi, loaded with obscure and heavily cloaked instrumentation. For final piece 'Thaleia's Neursathenia', eerily discordant piano phrases hover about the place while heavy gusts of air (perhaps like the breath of some sleeping leviathan... you know, if you're really getting into the spirit of things) and metallic, bell-like objects dole out their dulled chimes. Ace. Packaged in a silk-screened arigato pak in a limited edition of 500 copies only.
