Boomkat Product Review:
Georgian film director Nika Machaidze aka Nikakoi presents one of his more esoteric drone and modern composition works for Berlin's Laboratory Instinct imprint. Vol.1 of 'Requiem For Deranged Robot' comprises two longer tracks, from the deeply spacious drones and darting, silvery piano keys 'SystemSwitchOff', to a more cinematic collage of tense, haunting strings and unstable electronic topography on 'Disarrange', reminding almost of a much cleaner and digitised version of the recent Leyland Kirby material. Vol.2 visits a number of shorter melancholic themes, again brushed with a lushed out melodrama reminiscent of Kirby, or perhaps more the library themes which so inspired him. At moments we're enveloped in Boats-alike minimal digital minutiae or sometimes in the midst of delicate electronics worthy of an Alva Noto & Ryuichi Sakamoto session. It's an impressively coherant and heartfelt set, designed to elicit a wonderous, warm and emotional response.
