Boomkat Product Review:
Black Dice have come an awful long way from their roots, becoming something that's unrecognisable from the sound of early works like Beaches & Canyons. The band's influence can be heard on any number of Brooklyn groups currently clocking up blogtime but no one sounds quite as ludicrously unhinged as Black Dice. Repo takes their fusion of noise-driven electronics and head-spinning beats to hitherto uncharted territories, delivering sounds that are utterly entrenched in filth yet still remain artfully crisp and hi-fi. This sonic alchemy shouldn't be overlooked; the brazen weirdness of Repo is quite unlike the sort of decrepit, scuzzy fare you might hear in more fashionable, subterranean sectors of the American avant-garde, and tracks like 'Glazin' and 'Chicken Shit' manage to sound simultaneously dreadful and spectacularly well-crafted. You'll hear dismantled, vulcanised hip hop on 'Earnings Plus Interest', schizoid drum-morphing on 'La Cucaracha' and even a dose of annihilated baile funk on 'Gag Shack'. A thrilling, hallucinogenic and often comically surreal experience, listening to Repo is an out-of-body trip worth taking. Highly recommended.
