Zoviet France & Muslimgauze Remixes
you what? Incredible, long-lost Zoviet France and Muslimgauze remixes of PANASONIC finally see light of day after 23 years in cold storage, thanks to a serendipitous rediscovery by Sähkö
First made back when Mika Vainio and Ilpo Väisänen were gamely trading under the PANASONIC moniker (before the global corporation threatened litigation), this trio of remixes somehow remained lost until Sähkö’s Tommi Gronlund’s archiving activities uncovered them on old DAT tapes. Never before heard, they offer a real slice of history and electronic music archaeology framing Zoviet France and the late, great Bryn Jones aka Muslimgauze at their most explicitly techno and faithfully in step with the original material.
Kindred spirits to Panasonic’s elemental impetus and isolationist aesthetic, Northumbria’s Zoviet France supply a remarkable 13 minute remix hewing to a proper, pulsing tribal techno trance style with percolated bass and chilling choral pads that eventually swarm into keening murmurations, drawing strong parallels between their earliest classics. Likewise Muslimgauze, who was likely returning the favour of Panasonic’s remix to his ‘Druse’ cut off the ‘Bandit Queen EP’ (1996), helms close to the original in a thrumming bit of minimal techno offset with ruff dubbing, before balancing their bone crunching rhythms with smoke curl-vocals to hypnotic effect in the 2nd workout.
The Zoviet France remix is especially unmissable for all aerobic mystics out there!
