Smalltown Supersound Remix Anthology Vol. 1-4 2002-2022
Smalltown Supersound provide us with an epic 4-disc / 40 track remix monolith, charting a two decade sprawl that has seeped into both popular and avant garde culture in a way we dont think many labels have done with quite so much conviction and good taste - where else would you find Actress, Jim O'Rourke, Hieroglyphic Being, Oneohtrix Point Never, DJ Spinn, Merzbow, Pita, Neneh Cherry, Kelly Lee Owens, Bendik Giske, Coby Sey, Klara Lewis, Carmen Villain, Isoleé, Laurel Halo, DJ Python and Ricardo Villalobos on a single set?
There's almost too much to go into in detail, but the label smartly use this sprawling collage of reworks to tell the story of its development. So we get served Prins Thomas remixes from Ricardo Villalobos and DJ Nobu alongside Jazzkammer versions from Pita, Thurston Moore, Reynols and Merzbow. A Coby Sey remix of Kelly Lee Owens and John Cale's 'Corner of My Sky' is placed next to an Orb rework of Prins Thomas's 'H'. As usual though, our favorites veer off into the outerverse: Jim O'Rourke's take on Neneh Cherry & The Thing's 'Accordion' is like Barry Adamson at the GRM, and Laurel Halo's version of Bendik Giske's 'Cruising' is effortlessly vibey, seemingly inspired by her tenure in the Moritz von Oswald Trio. DJ Spinn's reconstruction of Neneh Cherry's 'Spit Three Times' might be the best of the bunch, chopping Cherry's voice into a stutter and slotting it between rolling 160BPM polyrhythms. It's an almost bottomless selection of gear though, and surprisingly reliably throughout.
Happy birthday to a great label we feel is only just getting into its stride, their last couple of years have in our opinnion quite easily been their best.
