Boomkat Product Review:
This is a bit special, and as I'm sure you've already guessed it's hideously limited (as most O'Malley related projects are). Ginnungagap is the collaborative project of Stephen O'Malley (Sunn O))), Khanate, KTL), Alexander Tucker and Anthony Sylvester and my oh my is it good. You might be having a bit of an O'Malley overload at the moment, but let me take a moment to convince you to buy the record that threatens to break the camel's back - this is not simply another Sunn O))) record, and it's not even bass heavy doom, it's something different entirely. You might remember seeing the cd (which is now long gone) of this album popping up on Southern's crucial Latitudes series of discs, and back then I fell for the haunting Eastern waves of acoustic drone - but I must say that it sounds even more crushing on wax. Housed in some stunning golden artwork from Alexander Tucker, the three musicians use Indian Harmonium, Tambura and bowed acoustic instruments to drum up an opium-filled soundscape to a hazy trip in the Middle-East. It's dark but never oppressive, moody but without any real leaning towards metal - instead this feels closer to the work of Tony Conrad and his contemporaries. This isn't going to last long and it looks and sounds utterly incredible so act fast if you want to secure one of these!!
