Boomkat Product Review:
Said to have been exclusively inspired by 10CC's 'I'm Not In Love', Gayngs' debut album, Relayted, is a collaboration between Ryan Olson and Solid Gold members Zack Coulter and Adam Hurlburt, receiving game additional support from Bon Iver's Justin Vernon and Mike Noyce as well as members of Megafaun (Joe Westerlund, Brad Cook, Phil Cook) and The Rosebuds (Ivan Howard). Further adding to the comically conceptual streak running through the record's history is the claim that all the tracks were recorded at 69bpm. Hmm, is that so? Well, whatever else is going on here, no one's laughing during opener 'The Gaudy Side Of Town', whose reclined funk and slinky saxophony makes Christopher Cross sound edgy. Hearing that familiar Bon Iver falsetto running through all this is a tad disturbing, truth be told. Get thee back to thy cabin, Vernon. All that purported 10CC love comes to a head with a spirited, irony-stripped cover of Godley & Creme's 1985 hit 'Cry', which shows serious reverence for the original, whilst laying down some great vocal harmonies and soaring chorused guitar lines. Best of the bunch is album finale 'The Last Prom On Earth', which combines sickly, twinkling 1980s electric piano, yet more gratuitous sax and - here's the mind-blower - Justin Vernon doing his best impression of Bone Thugs-N-Harmony.
