Boomkat Product Review:
Recent months have seen fervid online speculation that The Fiery Furnaces 'Rehearsing My Choir' is in fact a knee-jerk reaction to the success afforded 2004's 'Blueberry Boat' and represents a deliberate attempt to wrong-foot their fair-weather fans. So is it? Who f*cking knows, but it is certainly a departure from the scuzzy and dense stylings that characterised their previous outings, preferring instead to construct knowing compositions that are relatively sparse and bear comparison with The Dresden Dolls. Featuring numerous appearances from their grandmother on vocals (yes, their grandma) The Fiery Furnaces sound as if they've been hanging out with Bobby Conn (in terms of lyrical content) whilst the actual music flits between bosa-nova beats and bare piano, through to stomping Radiophonic electro... often all within the same song ('The Wayward Granddaughter'). Although not for those with a quirky aversion, songs such as 'Seven Silver Curses' and 'Slavin' Away' shake off the shackles of novelty and become pithily sharp diatribes on the most unlikely of subjects; a good thing regardless of their intentions. Burn baby, burn!
