Boomkat Product Review:
For this second volume in the Refurbished series, Don and Roel Funcken have compiled and collated yet more remixes from the Funckarma back catalogue, including one or two unreleased gems in addition to the expected retrospective material. Such is the strength of personality behind Funckarma's remixing work, you could quite reasonably treat this release as an original Funckarma album in its own right. While by no means indicative of a homogenised sound, the Brothers Funcken morph their source material into different configurations of their hallmark sound of cinematic, squished string sounds and annihilated, shuffled up beat sequencing. There are a couple of forays into more hip hop-like structures, as on the Shadow Huntaz remix of Strand & Tres ft. Omniscient's 'The Way It Was' and the severely jumbled-up stutters of Machine Drum's 'Machinebong', but even these are shrouded in that unmistakable off-kilter IDM futurism we all know and love. The closing piece, 'Raued Daued', a collaboration between Funckarma and Landou, is an especially effective piece of music, carrying all the usual obfuscated electronic convulsions and mangled time signatures, but with something of a symphonic quality thrown into the bargain; it's all very grand and makes for a great crescendo.
