Hessle Audio co-founder Pearson Sound uncoils his first solo EP since 2020 with four tight shots of moody breakbeat rolige, dark garage, and late night electro.
Now firmly back on the family label after the best part of decade tending to his eponymous imprint, Pearson Sound brings some classic UK moodiness to the dance that hovers around his inspirations from late ‘90s and mid ‘00s D&B, dubstep and breakstep, beside a fine new stripe of inspiration from brooding Detroit beatdown that resonates with Stingray & Gerald Donald’s NRSB-11 project or even dBridge’s autonomic styles.
‘Red Sky’ is upfront, bone-swivelling breakstep wielding needlepoint choppage on swollen Reese bass and IDM-slanted synths in a classic formula done well. ’Sinkhole’ is a clear homage to El-B’s dark garage reductions of neuro D&B, rent with resonant, Burial-esque dubbing, and ‘Freefall’ keeps the tempo up at electroid garage pace, peppered with samples of Delia Derbyshire’s ‘The Dreams’. The standout for us is ‘Around in Circles’, where he toys with meter on a pendulous downstroke buoyed by wide bass and arced by noctilucent Motor City motifs and fine-tuned congas that give it a dead sexy hustle.
