Boomkat Product Review:
Red Axes rework four tracks from Lena Platonos’ Gallop (1985) LP for Dark Entries, following its celebrated reissue in 2015.
Drawing a more romantic Mediterranean connection than we’re sadly used to seeing in the news nowadays, Red Axes channel Lena’s balmy, dusky, poetic new wave vocals and sinuous grooves into lean, rolling, yet mercurial versions instinctively guided by a dancing life “raised on a diet of post-punk, new-wave, and Italo-disco at fogged out warehouses and basement parties.”
In their hot hands Witches is galvanised with glittering metallic feathers for a low-rolling, acidic flight with some beautiful, strobing vocal processing, whereas No.9 is iced-out to a hazy crawl before blossoming crimson, panoramic pads.
The rolling, minimal disco-tech blips of And We Hear “I Love You” make for the straightest player, and Liqueur Ruby twists back into the twilight zone with a lysergic deliquescence emphasised by the shuffling, moire like geometries of The Dirty Lizards’ middle eastern rhythms.
