Recordings 1974-79
**Important early American DIY tape recordings, remastered reissue, available on vinyl for the first time. Individual edition of 200 from the American Cassette Culture boxset made available to non-subscribers. Includes hand-numbered certificate of ownership**
Robert Carlberg's pioneering role in the American DIY tape scene is comprehensively revealed by V-O-D in the most fascinating entry to their latest batch.
Under the Anode Productions mantle and as part of Savant's rotating assembly with Kerry Leimer, Carlberg actively and instinctively smudged the boundaries between musique concrète, minimalist tape-music, drones and abstract tones, and would form the foundational newsletter, SYNEX, besides writing a monthly column for Electronic Musician Magazine (1979-1989).
He was basically a West Coast lynchpin and catalyst, and lead by example with his music, documented here in excerpts from various tapes.
The first face reveals a mad selection of cut-ups, abstract black holes and alien pastoral moments from his impossible-to-find 1974-75 releases, 'Early Tapewoprm', 'Floyd Cramers Hall of Gold', and 'Year of the Tape Recorder', whilst the 2nd ups the fidelity in seven 'Kinetic Experiments' of calmer ambience, SAW II-style percussion and wistful miniatures circa 1974-1979.
Lastly, the other disc documents 'Trips North Trips South' (1977-1979), including two horizon-reaching 20 minute excursions, including "pretreated keyboards" by Marc Barreca, and two fluidly pastoral drifts.
