Boomkat Product Review:
With a name like ‘R+B=’ it would be easy to mistake Geoff White’s latest LP under the Aeroc moniker to be another 2011 triangular R&B pastiche, but somehow White doesn’t fall for any of the tropes of the scene, instead emerging with an album of delicate acoustic guitar and clipped beats. Seriously – White, who already has the pointed glitch beatplay down (check his 4/4 work, seriously good stuff) has taken the acoustic guitar as the focus of ‘R+B=’ and proceeded to build the electronics around that framework. The album ends up sounding sort of like a funkier Alva Noto & Ryuichi Sakamoto, if Sakamoto was jamming guitar rather than piano of course. Maybe a closer comparison would be Scott Heron’s gorgeous Savath and Savalas albums from a few years back, but Aeroc is decidedly more neon coated and future facing than that. Recommended!
