Laura Cannell enchants with the 5th in her current calendar series; four pieces of anthropomorphic animism channelling her corvid spirit animal
In ‘Ravenlore’ Cannell uses the bass recorder to mimic the low tones of Raven vocalisations, improvised and recorded live in St Andrews Church in Raveningham, and imaginatively structured around a personal syncretisation of local folklore and her own readings of its stories.
Laura says: “"It was only a matter of time until my spirit animal made an appearance. Ravens feature in the name of the village I grew up in, they made a brief appearance in my 2022 album 'Antiphony of the Trees', I wrote a piece for them in my debut solo album in 2014 "Quick Sparrows Over the Black Earth" (Hraefn Hroc), and they were the title of my duo album from 2012 with the fabulous harpist Rhodri Davies 'Feathered Swing of the Raven' a live recorded and improvised album.”
After monthly episodes dwelling on the sea, earth, rivers, and mountains, this one takes to the air and trees for lovely suite sweeping from the ululating call and response of ‘’Tool Users and Tool Makers’, to the ribboning, extended line of melodic thought in ‘Tricksters and Prophets’, and pal of ‘White Raven’, to the soaring scope of ‘Flying on Long Wings’.
